And… lets not forget the Dawn spacecraft currently orbiting Ceres. Its already given us highly detailed images of the dwarf planet, and it won’t make its closest approach until December – so even sharper images are yet to come.
A strange mountain-like structure (which the media are incorrectly calling a “pyramid”) has been observed; on the image below, it appears toward the right side just above the center:
Here’s a close-up of that feature:
It doesn’t look like a pyramid to me. Frankly, it looks like a volcano. Elsewhere there’s clear evidence that Ceres has active vulcanism going on, so finding an actual volcano should not come as a surprise.
More details should emerge in the coming months.
